A short flavour of our basketball travels:
Cracking trip to New Jersey with 36 talented Irish basketballer, 4 coaches and a sprinkling of parents involved eight hour flight starting out with an early gathering in Dublin airport on Thursday morning. After a day of travelling and an evenings rest, the outlet shops got a serious going over with a rush on Nike store and size 12/13 baller boots.
Tournament play started Saturday with a full day of action across four teams. Facilities that we can only dream about as the venue had 7 full courts lacquered to shine and receive the multitude of bouncing balls and athletic feet that gave an exhibition of games over the two days. For good measure it also included a full sized indoor soccer pitch. It was a baptism of fire for the Irish lads and a massive learning experience as the physicality and athletism was something they'd never faced before. As a small example, you couldn't get fouled out of a game here and in truth a foul was only called following something akin to GBH. I think Robert had just the one foul over 4 games!
There were 9 players selected to play today, on foot of their performance over the last 2 days, against the USA New York rising stars. Bundle of coaches and decision makers from 7 different schools are due in attendance to give our guys the once over, looking for next year's talent.
Making a late push in the final games meant Robert got called out as the 3rd pick and we've had a very emotional evening (even a few tears and a great big Bobs hug.) He couldn't be more appreciative, I couldn't be more proud.
So off we set today into New York City with dreams of what might be and creating more fantastic lifetime memories.
